Analytical Essay requirements & standards for grading

Throughout the course of the semester, students will write three analytical research papers that introduce and describe a work of art selected from our text.  

Composition of essays:
  1. Include a color image of the art work
  2. Introduce the work of art, noting artist, title, date, medium, dimensions, location, cultural influences of the time period, and any other pertinent information surrounding the specific work.
  3. The bulk of the paper should be a well formed analytical essay describing the pertinent elements and principles of design the artist/designer is using in the specific work of art.  Please return to our introductory notes on the class blog to note all the elements and principles of design.
  4. Each element / principle should be thoroughly described analyzing how the artist has made use of each in the work of art. Each element/principle should be described at minimum, two paragraphs.
  5. Include any symbolic references found in the work of art.
  6. Include any other pertinent information you have researched.
  7. Write a conclusionary paragraph to bring your essay to an end.
  8. Add works cited bibliography both for information and image used.

Standards for grading
2 page minimum,  double spaced (800 word minimum)

Essay contains accomplishment of the three area points:
1. 80% of overall grade goes towards content & description of how the formal elements are operating. The essay is well developed, thoughtful and analytical in nature. Essay brings in excellent descriptive support of how the elements are operating in this particular work of art.  (Each element will receive approximately 20%)

2. 10% of overall grade goes towards the information provided of the symbolism in the painting and includes properly cited bibliographic sources.

3. 10% of overall grade towards the essay's mechanics of writing. The essay's structure is well organized, transitions are smooth, grammar is excellent, and includes the addition of image with proper labeling. Essay is coherent and illustrates technical control of the author.

Standards for grading
Essay contains accomplishment of the three area points:

1. 80% of overall grade applied to content & description of how the formal elements (above) are operating in the sculpture in the round. The essay is well developed, thoughtful and analytical in nature. 

Essay brings in excellent descriptive support of how the elements are operating in this particular work of art.

(Each element will receive approximately 20%)
> Line : actual line and implied line
> Volume and Mass
> Repetitive shapes found throughout the sculpture
> Texture : actual and implied

2. 10% of overall grade
i. Material and application of tools > overall value 3%
ii. Compare the Pieta  sculpture with one found from our text from the 15th century (may be additive or subtractive techniques). Include an image of the sculpture you are making your comparison > overall value 7%



3. 10% of overall grade towards the essay's mechanics of writing. The essay's structure is well organized, transitions are smooth, grammar is excellent, and includes the addition of image with proper labeling. Essay is coherent and illustrates excellent technical control of the author.

Essay brings in excellent descriptive support of how the elements are operating in this particular work of art.
i. Shape & repetition, implied and actual
ii.Color and Value (contrast especially)
iii. Scale, geometric vs. organic
iv. Space & Texture (depth full space)

(Each element will receive approximately 20%)


2. 10% of overall grade
Research on Klimt's The Kiss - make sure you properly cite it.



3. 10% of overall grade towards the essay's mechanics of writing. The essay's structure is well organized, transitions are smooth, grammar is excellent, and includes the addition of image with proper labeling. Essay is coherent and illustrates excellent technical control of the author.
